The First Grooming Visit: How to Prepare Your Pet

A grooming table is not a familiar place for most animals: new sounds, new smells, unfamiliar hands. If the first appointment goes well, every one after it gets easier. If it goes badly, your pet remembers that moment for years.

In the days before

At home, touch the paws, ears and mouth briefly. The goal is not grooming — it is getting used to being handled. A minute or two a day is enough.

Brush a little each day rather than all at once right before the appointment. A matted coat makes the cut longer and more tiring for everyone.

On the day

Do not bring your pet on an empty stomach, but not straight after a full meal either — a light meal two hours before is ideal. A short walk beforehand helps take the edge off.

Your own tension travels down the lead. Keeping the goodbye short usually works better than a long attempt at reassurance.

Tell us in advance

If your pet is older, has joint pain, has had a bad experience before, or dislikes being touched in a particular spot, we need to know. That changes the pace and the order of the work.

Every animal has its own pace. Treating the first appointment as an introduction works better than trying to finish everything in one go.
